hide.me VPN Review (2026): The Only Audited Free Tier

Every VPN says it keeps no logs. hide.me is one of the few free ones where somebody outside the company has actually checked. Its free tier is also unusual in a second way: no monthly data cap at all, at a time when most free plans hand you a few gigabytes and a countdown. It scores 84/100. The catch is speed — independent testing put the average local slowdown at around 42%, the steepest of the three free VPNs we have looked at.

The audit is the whole argument

In 2024, Securitum — the same firm that audits Proton VPN, ExpressVPN and parts of NordVPN — examined hide.me's server configurations, network architecture and logging infrastructure, and found no evidence that user activity logs were being created or stored anywhere in production. hide.me is additionally accredited by the VPN Trust Initiative through 2026. That combination puts it ahead of most free VPNs on the one measure that is hardest to fake, and it is the specific reason we rate it above providers with faster connections and no verification.

Two things temper it. First, there is no publicly documented independent audit for 2025 — the most recent is 2024, and before that the previous one was in 2015, a gap of roughly nine years. An audit is a snapshot, and snapshots age. Second, hide.me operates from Malaysia, which does not carry the data-protection framework a Swiss or EU base does, and it does not run RAM-only servers, so a seized machine is not automatically empty the way Windscribe's proved to be. None of that undoes the audit. All of it belongs in the same paragraph as the audit.

The free tier: uncapped, and slow

hide.me's free plan gives you unlimited data — no monthly allowance to ration, which almost nothing else at this price offers. It also includes the security features that matter: a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and split tunnelling, none of them held back for paying users. What you trade is capacity and choice: one device at a time, eight locations, and speeds hide.me itself describes as "restricted". For someone who wants an always-on privacy layer on a single laptop and does not care how fast it is, that is a genuinely good deal. For anyone streaming or moving large files, it is not.

Speed: the real cost

We do not run a VPN lab, so we take speed from published independent testing, cited and dated. TechNadu (February 2026) recorded a 682.73 Mbps baseline. Their nearest server cost about 25%, and the average across local connections was roughly 42%. On a New York server the figure fell to 227.51 Mbps down and 2.55 Mbps up — an upload speed low enough to make video calls or file uploads painful. For comparison, in the same cluster Proton exceeded its baseline on a local server and Windscribe lost about 19% nearby. hide.me is the slow one, and no amount of good privacy engineering changes that. The same testing found no DNS or IP leaks.

Pricing, and a promise most providers won't make

The free plan costs nothing. Premium runs $11.99/month, $4.58/month on the annual plan (billed $54.99), or $2.59/month on a 27-month term (billed $69.99, with three months added). Paid unlocks 92 locations across 2,600 servers, 10 simultaneous devices, streaming support, port forwarding and a fixed IP option, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. One clause deserves attention that it rarely gets: hide.me states a "Pricing Guarantee — your plan always renews with the same price and duration." That is unusual and worth money. Most cheap VPN headline rates are introductory: Proton's $3.49/month becomes roughly $6.99 on renewal. hide.me is promising the number you sign up at is the number you keep. At 84/100, hide.me is the free VPN to choose when you want the privacy claim verified rather than asserted — the only one of the three here with an audit behind it, and the only free tier with no data cap. It is also the slowest, and its Malaysian base will matter to some readers more than others. That trade is stated on the tin, which is more than most of this market manages.
