PrivadoVPN Review (2026): Fast, Cheap, and No Longer Swiss

PrivadoVPN is the fastest VPN we have looked at in this category and comfortably the cheapest — independent testing measured about 4.5% speed loss on a nearby server, and the two-year plan works out at $1.11 a month. The free tier gives you 10 GB every 30 days at full speed. It scores 85/100. Two things keep it off the top: it has never published an independent audit, and the company that controls your data is no longer Swiss — a change most reviews of it have not caught up with.

It moved to Iceland, and nobody noticed

If you read about PrivadoVPN anywhere else, you were probably told it is Swiss. Its own privacy policy, last updated on 1 May 2026, says the data controller is Privado Networks ehf, "a private limited company organized under the laws of Iceland." The Swiss company, Privado Networks AG in Zug, still appears — but only as one of several entities that may process payments. The supervisory authority named in the policy is Persónuvernd, Iceland's data protection regulator.

This matters more for a VPN than for almost any other product, because jurisdiction is much of what you are buying. Iceland is a reasonable place to be: outside the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangements, inside the EEA for data-protection purposes, with no mandatory data retention for this kind of service. It is not a downgrade. But it is not what you were told, and a reader who chose PrivadoVPN specifically for Swiss privacy law made that choice on a fact that has changed. We flag it because a review that repeats the old answer is worse than useless.

Speed: the best numbers here

We do not run a VPN lab, so speed comes from published independent testing, cited and dated. VPNOverview, testing over WireGuard from a US connection, recorded a 201.21 Mbps baseline and then 192.11 Mbps in New York — a loss of roughly 4.5%, small enough that most people would never notice it. Los Angeles and Toronto came in around 190 Mbps. Crossing the Atlantic cost more but not much: London 181.14, Amsterdam 180.49, Berlin 179.49 — about 10% down, with ping rising from 3 ms to around 30 ms. For context, in the same cluster hide.me averaged roughly 42% loss locally. PrivadoVPN is not marginally faster than its rivals here; it is in a different bracket.

The free plan

10 GB every 30 days on one device. No speed throttle on the free tier — the allowance is the limit, not the pace, which is the opposite of how hide.me structures its free plan. Ten gigabytes is enough for everyday browsing, email and public-Wi-Fi protection for most of a month; it is not enough for streaming, and it will not survive a large download. If your use is "keep me private on my laptop", it works. If it is "watch things", it does not.

The missing audit

PrivadoVPN advertises a zero-log policy. No independent auditor has published a check of it. That puts it in the same position as Windscribe, and behind Proton, whose infrastructure has passed five consecutive annual audits, and hide.me, audited by Securitum in 2024. It is worth being precise about what this does and does not mean: an unaudited no-logs policy is not evidence of logging. It is an absence of evidence either way, and you are trusting the company's word. Whether that is acceptable depends on what you are protecting yourself from — a shared café network, or something with more consequence.

(One oddity worth recording: VPNOverview's review states in its verdict that PrivadoVPN is "not audited independently", and elsewhere on the same page describes its no-logs policy as "independently audited". We take the specific verdict over the generic line, and mention it so you know the discrepancy exists.)

At 85/100, PrivadoVPN is the one to pick when you want a free VPN that does not feel like a compromise on speed, or a paid one that costs about as much as a coffee a year. The gap between it and the top of this list is not performance, and it is not price — it is verification. Proton and hide.me have let someone else check the claim. PrivadoVPN has not, and until it does, the difference is trust.
