Base64 encoder & decoder

Handles any Unicode text, not just ASCII — a single euro sign breaks naive encoders built on btoa alone. Decoding accepts URL-safe Base64 with or without padding, which is what you usually find in the wild.

About this tool

Base64 encodes arbitrary data as plain ASCII text, which is why it turns up everywhere — data URIs, email attachments, API tokens, and anywhere binary needs to travel through a text-only channel. This tool encodes text to Base64 and decodes it back, and it handles the cases that trip up naive implementations.

Full Unicode is supported, not just plain ASCII: a single euro sign or emoji breaks encoders built on the browser’s btoa alone, whereas this encodes the UTF-8 bytes correctly. On decoding, it accepts URL-safe Base64 (which swaps a couple of characters) with or without padding, because that is the variant you most often encounter in tokens and URLs.

Everything runs in your browser, so the data you encode or decode is not uploaded. Use it to inspect a token, build a data URI, or convert text to a form that survives a text-only transport.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 used for?
Representing binary or arbitrary data as plain text so it can travel through text-only channels — data URIs, email, and tokens are common examples.
Does it handle Unicode and emoji?
Yes. It encodes the UTF-8 bytes correctly, so characters like the euro sign or emoji work — unlike simple encoders that only handle ASCII.
What is URL-safe Base64?
A variant that replaces the “+” and “/” characters (and often drops padding) so the result is safe in URLs. The decoder accepts it with or without padding.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent to a server.
