About this tool

Find out what an appliance actually costs to run. Enter its power draw in watts, how many hours a day you use it, and your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour, and the tool estimates the energy it consumes and the cost per day, month and year.

It is a practical way to see which devices are quietly driving your bill — an always-on server, an air conditioner, a space heater or an old fridge — and to judge whether a more efficient replacement would pay for itself. Because it costs each appliance individually, you can compare them on a like-for-like basis.

The calculation runs in your browser, so your usage and rate stay private. The result is an estimate based on the figures you provide; real consumption varies with how hard a device works, but it gives a sound basis for budgeting and for deciding where to cut usage.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to estimate an appliance’s running cost?
Its power rating in watts, the hours you use it per day, and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). From those the tool works out the daily, monthly and yearly cost.
What is a kilowatt-hour?
It is the unit electricity is billed in — using one kilowatt of power for one hour. Your bill shows a price per kWh, which is the rate to enter here.
Where do I find an appliance’s wattage?
Usually on a label on the device or in its manual or specifications. Enter that figure, or a typical value for the appliance type, to estimate its consumption.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is based on the wattage and hours you provide; actual use varies as devices cycle on and off or change load, but it gives a reliable basis for comparison and budgeting.
Is my data kept private?
Yes. The calculation runs in your browser, so your usage figures and rate are not sent anywhere.
