About this tool

Check whether a telephone number is well-formed and convert it to the international standard format. This validator verifies a number’s structure and country prefix according to international (ITU) conventions, identifies the likely country of origin, cleans away spaces, dashes and brackets, and outputs the number in canonical E.164 form — the “+” and digits format that systems expect.

That is exactly what you need when storing numbers in a database, importing a contact list, or preparing numbers for an SMS or calling service, all of which are far more reliable with a consistent format. Catching a malformed number early prevents failed messages and calls later.

The validation runs in your browser, so the numbers you check are not uploaded. Note that it verifies format and structure rather than confirming that a number is currently active — a well-formed number can still be unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

What is E.164 format?
It is the international standard for phone numbers: a leading “+”, the country code, and the national number with no spaces or punctuation. It is the format most messaging and telephony systems expect.
Does this confirm a number is real and active?
No. It checks that a number is correctly structured for its country and formats it, but it cannot tell whether the line is currently assigned or reachable.
Can it identify the country of a number?
Yes. From the prefix it identifies the likely country of origin as part of validating the number.
Why standardise numbers to E.164?
Because a consistent format makes storage, deduplication and integration with SMS and calling services reliable, avoiding the errors that inconsistent local formatting causes.
Are the numbers I check kept private?
Yes. Validation runs in your browser, so the numbers are not sent to a server.
